Career

So for this paper we are writing in English it kind of goes hand in hand with my career path. We have to write a persuasive essay over a topic of your choice. I chose to do Direct Access in Physical Therapy which is for patients to be able to see a physical therapist without a physicians referral. I think this is awesome because when I was going to physical therapy I had to have a doctors referral or I might not have had to but I went and seen the doctor first anyway. But when I was done with physical therapy I thought that people should be able to go when they want and not have to have the doctors approval and that was before I found out about direct access. After reading about all of this and doing research I have learned a lot which makes me feel even more positive about direct access. I think direct access is an awesome idea, it helps people get into physical therapy faster than having to go to their family doctor and get referred to the PT. It costs patients less money too because they do not have to pay for the doctor office costs just for physical therapists. There are only a few states in the United States that do not do direct access and are trying really hard to get it. Medicare is also trying to get direct access as well. I think direct access is a great idea though!

  1. I have never been to a physical therapist or known anything about this, but after reading your summary about it I would have to say I agree with you! I knew you had to get a referral, but I did not know it could be that stressful. It does sound like a great idea I mean you can go when you want, and save money. I mean who does not like to save money? Times are hard, and if it is something you really need you do not want to spend extra money on something that is unnecessary to the benefit of the patient. I know when I did my interview with an Occupation Therapist that she said that the Physical Therapist can sometimes refer a patient to them without a doctors referral. I think that this is a great topic to write your paper on. I never knew this, and it seems like it would have a lot of information about it. I think that the whole idea of Dircet Acess is nice, but I see one problem. I would think that maybe a person that likes to think they have problems comes in and takes away from the therapist working on other patients that really need the help. i know a lot of people that would do something like this to get attention on themselves. I know it is crazy, but there are people out there like that. All in all I think this is a good paper! Good luck on it, and all of your other classes!

  2. I edited your proposal extravaganza today in class and I would have to say you made some pretty good points in it. Direct Access does have some points that make since but since I am difficult I would have to disagree with Direct Access. Even though Direct Access does not have an affect on my everyday life I still have opinions on this stuff because I like to argue! I would say that Direct Access is kind of pointless. By 2014, everyone is going to be made to have insurance. The insurance would cover the cost of the doctor's appointment and the cost of the physical therapy. With this being said, I do not see how Direct Access would save the patient any money than before? Also I think it is important for patience to go see doctors first. A patient might think they have something wrong with them that needs physical therapy when in all reality they may not. Seeing a doctor first would save the patient a lot of unneeded time they would have wasted. Also, if there is a patient going to physical therapy that does not need it they could be wasting the insurances money which could be adding to the debt of the United States. I believe it is always important to see a doctor first. Of course this is my opinion; I personally do not like going to physical therapy so I will do everything in my power to get out of it. I was just told that after my surgery I am going to have to go to Physical Therapy for six weeks which I am not looking forward to!
