Reading Response 2

While reading The Canary-Colored Caravan of Death, I found it almost hard to keep up with. After reading the introduction and the whole story it showed a lot that her parents were English teachers and that she lived in a funeral home. I think she looked up to her parents a lot, especially her father, but I thought it was sad that her parents were always so busy and they did not really spend time together. I think this is what caused her to be such an unhappy person and so bitter. I think her knowing why her dad killed himself helped her, a lot and made her realize she did not want where she lived to impact her like that. I think it is sad that he killed himself and that it was because of the small town that he lived in. It makes me happy that I do not live in a small-minded town like that, that is kind of cut off from the rest of the country. I think it was nice that because of where she lived, her parents being English teachers, and her reading poetry, she wanted to write it. She seemed like a very creative person but her parents kind of stopped her. Her dad thought he was helping her but really he was kind of making her dislike it in ways because he wanted to perfect everything she did. Her parents being busy all the time helped her grow as a person and make her more responsible which is a very good thing.

  1. I also found that this comic was hard to keep up with. And I missed out on a lot of information such as that she lived in a funeral home, I missed that part. I do disagree on how you think she looked up to her parents, my belief is that she wanted nothing to do with her parents work. Like when her father corrected her coloring, she kind of looked the other way and was upset, and when her father suggested a poem verse, she said she never wanted anything to do with poetry nor color again. I did also think that she was unhappy, the feeling of the story was kind of gloomy all the way through. I feel like her parents tried to urge her on to writing and she didn't seem like she wanted to. I also got the feeling that she wanted to move out of that town, that she wanted nothing to do with where she lived or the people in it.
